Self Catering Chalets

We have 3 lovely thatched brick built chalets for you to stay in at Bambelela!  They are situated right down in the valley, near the Groot Nylsoog River, just before you reach our Animal Rehabilitation Area and are in a lovely peaceful spot to relax, unwind, read and sunbathe, each with their own braai (barbecue) facilities and patio. At the chalets we have a DSTV dish and TV for you to bring along your own DSTV decoder and DSTV card. Full DSTV viewing is available at our pool lapa (thatched hut).  Each chalet has an Info A-Z booklet in the living room, with information and advice to help you get the most out of your stay.  Please don’t forget to fill in the Visitors’ Book!

What’s Included?

Our rate includes a welcoming bottle of wine, tea/coffee, bathroom towels and tea-towels, toiletries, bag of firewood, housekeeping service twice a day, a 1.5 hour guided tour of Bambelela’s Animal Rehabiltation Facilities plus Nappy Hour or Kindergarten!


The wildlife of the valley roams freely through this area and you will definitely see zebra, warthog, baboons and vervet monkeys plus a variety of birds. You may even see a porcupine! There are also free roaming peacocks on the property and lots of cats. Silke also has a number of dogs, who generally stay around her own house within the Animal Rehabilitation Area.

Food and Drink

You should shop in Bela-Bela or bring supplies from home as Bambelela is 20 km away from the town, down gravel roads. The kitchen has a good fridge with freezer section, full cooking facilities and microwave oven, plus the outside braai (barbecue) facilities.

Mobile Phone and Wi-Fi

Please note that due to our remote location in the valley, we do not have very good cellphone coverage around the chalets – the signal is only available at certain parts of the property. Wi-fi is available at the lodges for a nominal fee – when it works!  We are in the African bush, you know!


Check-In and Check-Out
Check-in is from 1400 hours (2pm) and check-out is by 1100 hours (11am).  If you require a later check-out time up to 1830 hours (6.30pm), please ask if this is available.
 Leopards-Rock-Estate-Gate Access Through Leopard’s Rock Gate
Access to Bambelela is through Leopard’s Rock Gate (see ‘How to Find Us’). The gate is manned by a Security Guard. Anyone booking for a day tour or to stay at a chalet is given the code for the gate.  You can then hire a remote control for the gate from us for the duration of your stay, for just 150 Rand, which makes coming and going much easier!


_MG_2758_small Swimming Pool and Sauna
The three self-catering chalets have free access to the swimming pool and sauna area, beside which is a fire pit and lapa bar area used for parties and get-togethers.  The pool is available in the summer and is surrounded by a patio area with tables and sun loungers.  The sauna must be booked at least 45 minutes before you would like to use it and costs 100 Rand per person for 3 hours – minimum of 2 people required.  We can supply pool and sauna towels but you may prefer to bring your own.
Tuck-shop-sign_small Curio Shop and Kiosk
Bambelela has a wonderful new Curio Shop and Kiosk which now stocks a limited range of frozen meat, tinned goods, dried goods, herbs, spices etc. as well as branded Bambelela clothing, mugs, water bottles, cold drinks, bottled water, crisps, chocolate, ice cream and a new stunning range of hand crafted jewellery.Extra braai wood is 20 Rand per bag, firelighters are also 20 Rand and 2kg ice is 10 Rand per bag.  The shop is just across from the chalets.   There is a credit card facility, but cash is also very welcome.


Tour of Bambelela’s Facilities


A tour of our facilities is included and can be arranged at a mutually agreeable time during your stay. The tour takes about an hour to an hour and a half –

Nappy Hour


Between October and May you are invited to join us in the Rehab Facility to see the orphaned baby Vervets getting their Pampers on to get ready for sleeping with their human surrogate mother or father.  Great photo opportunities!

Playtime in Kindergarten


Between November and July you are invited to remove all your jewellery and glasses, bring a change of clothes (you can get quite grubby!) and take the plunge into our Kindergarten with the Vervet Monkey Babies and some of our Volunteers!  See for yourself how the Vervets can undo laces, get into your pockets and steal your hankie, pull open velcro flaps on clothing and shoes, sit on your head, investigate your hair, go down the inside of your T shirt and much more!!  You can get little nips and scrapes from their boisterous play, although this is more likely the older they get in June and July.  Great photo opportunities but hang onto your camera!

Guided Walks


One of our Field Guide Trainees will take you on a guided walks through our property, situated in a valley surrounded by the Waterberg Mountains, at a cost of 100 Rand per adult and 50 Rand per child over 6 years old. The tour is not suitable for children who are younger than this. The tour takes 1 to 2 and a half hours depending on fitness levels of guests. A cool drink and snack is included.

Thaba Kwena Crocodile Farm

“Open seven days a week from 9h00 to 16h00, Thaba Kwena is the largest Crocodile farm open to the public in South Africa.With more than 10 000 crocodiles and fully guided tours by our excellent tour guides, it is definitely an experience not to be missed.

Because we at Thaba Kwena value education, we offer special tariffs to all school – and educational groups. In our welcoming Curio shop, you will find a variety of gifts and memoirs, as well as frozen and vacuum packet crocodile meat, and various leather products, including wallets, purses and belts.

Feeding time at Thaba Kwena is one of the highlights of your visit and happens only during the summer months, normally Saturdays at 14h00.

Don’t forget to say a “Hallo” to the newest addition to our “family” – the American Alligators!

We are situated approximately 14km from Bela Bela (Warmbaths) on the R101 towards Modimolle (Nylstroom), and then turn on the dust road, named “Groot Nylsoog”.  Follow the dust road for +- 4km and you will find our gate on your left hand side”


Zebula Spa & Golf Estate

Approximately 1 hour’s drive from Bambelela,  Zebula offers SPA massage treatments, Golf, Game Drives, Cheetah Runs, Horse Riding Safaris and Bush Walks.

Adventures with Elephants

Close to Zebula, Adventures with Elephants offers Elephant Interactions and Rides and you can Swim with the Elephants (in season). They also have a small shop and light refreshments. Bookings made through us will receive a 5% discount.

De Wildt Cheetah and Wild Dog Ranch at Shingwedzi

Approximately 1 hour 15 mins drive from Bambelela –  this is the centre near Bela Bela, NOT the one at Hartbeespoort.  They breed cheetah and wild dogs, offer Cheetah Runs and Interactions and an excellent tour where you will see the rare King Cheetah and a pack of wild dogs, amongst other animals.  They also have a small shop for souvenirs and snacks.
