Please email us or respond to a post on Facebook if you would like to become a Guardian Angel (GA).  Payment may be made by using the Donate button on our website, using either PayPal or a credit card. All GAs of Pinkface babies will be able to name their baby Vervet, perhaps in memory of someone. Guardian Angel to a Hand-Reared Pinkface

R350.00 per month for 10 months or a one-off payment of R3500.00

Each season, which starts around October, Bambelela receives around 30 baby orphaned Vervet Monkeys, many of whom are very young. Their mothers have often been shot by farmers or killed on the road, with the baby found clinging to its dead mother. Some have been offered for sale and thankfully bought with the purpose of rescue and taken to Bambelela.

These babies are often traumatised and have to be hand reared by a human surrogate mother, wearing a nappy at nighttime, sleeping with them in the house and being bottle fed throughout the day and night. This is an intensive, costly process but so worth while!

Guardian Angel to a Kindergarten Pinkface

R250.00 per month for 6 months or a one-off payment of R1500.00

Once the tiny hand-reared pinkfaces grow up enough, they will start to sleep outside in Kindergarten with surrogate monkey mothers. This is the next stage in their rehabilitation process through which they will be formed into troops and be released back into the wild. This is where they start to get to know each other and the other Kindergarten monkeys, play fighting and seeing who will be boss!

Guardian Angel to a Vervet in Rehab

R150.00 per month for 12 months or a one-off payment of R1800.00

The baby monkeys have now grown, are being formed into troops and being prepared for release, which is the whole purpose of the work carried out at Bambelela. At this time, human interaction is gradually reduced so that the monkeys start to be distanced from humans and become more like wild monkeys – so essential for their successful release back into the wild.

R250.00 per month for 12 months or a one-off payment of R3000.00

These monkeys are very old or handicapped – for example, Kingsley ate a banana in which someone had planted a firecracker and it blew up in his face. Monkeys may be missing one or more limbs, be blind or have had a head trauma. Many of these monkeys are unlikely to be able to be released into the wild, but there is still a chance for some of them to become free when they come to terms with their disability. Others will live in captivity but in safe surroundings.

Guardian Angel to a Free-Living Pinkface or a Pinkface born in Rehab

R200.00 per month for 12 months or a one-off payment of R2400.00

The free living Vervets at Bambelela were the first troop of orphaned monkeys rehabilitated by Silke and her team, and released at Bambelela. The troop is thriving and breeding well and if you visit Bambelela you will see them all around you – even sitting outside your chalet kitchen window, watching you prepare dinner! A well known member of the troop is the ‘One Armed Bandit’ who loves to steal from your table when you’re outside on the patio!
